Everyone wants a senior picture to show off to their family and friends, but when you are the photographer you want the photograph to come out perfectly so you are able to get referred to new clients. My top 10 tips to take better senior portraits are:

1) Plan the poses before the shoot and print them out into a contact sheet to show the client.

2) Make sure you choose a background of your clients choice that has a minimal amount of people or clutter in the background.

3) Make sure to shoot different angles.

4) Take the portraits an hour before sunset to get the best lighting.

5) Make the person feel as comfortable as possible by being open and not being too serious.

6) Bring food. Everyone loves food.

7) Tell your client to bring a variety of outfits (formal, semi-formal, casual, etc.)

8) Let them look at the photographs you have taken because it will open them up to taking more.

9) Choose a lens without zoom so you don't distort the photograph or lessen the amount of quality (50 mm).

10) If shooting in an urban area choose architectural areas to frame the subject.
